A Novel Recommendation

One of my professors from college, Barbara G. Tucker, has written a book and it has been published--finally. I am so proud of her. I know how hard it is to write a book (my remains unpublished) and how much harder it is to write fiction. She sent me the galleys a couple of months ago and I have been reading them. The novel is called Traveling Through, and as the review in Amapedia says:

Traveling Through
This novel starts in 1986 with the arrival of a pastor’s family in a suburb of Cincinnatti, OH. The family includes father and mother and two children, a four-year-old girl and eleven-year-old son. So far, so good. But as neighbor Esther Lundy watches them move in, she is struck by the fact the son is, like her, African-American. She wants to know what’s going on, and makes friends with the wife, Carlie. As the book progresses, we learn through flashbacks how the son, Josiah, came to be in this family and what it has meant to his mother and father.

Through Esther, Carlie becomes involved in a crisis pregnancy center and becomes more and more convinced that because of her experience, her purpose in life is to work for the prolife movement. Her husband, Jeff, disagrees. Long-standing conflicts in their marriage come to a boil; Jeff begins to question his own place as a pastor. It all leads up to a hot day in July with unexpected and irreversible consequences.

Many themes are explored in the book, political, personal, and religious. It’s about people, however, not ideas. It is a novel for people who want a book that will make them think and feel.
